The Hidden Cost of Buying Car Insurance Online: One Mistake Can Cost Thousands
Buying car insurance online may save you a little money upfront. But what happens when something goes wrong and you discover your vehicle isn’t covered the way you thought it was?
Recently, a friend called me with a situation involving one of his adult children. The story is a perfect example of why having the right insurance matters far more than simply getting a policy purchased.
A New Car, a New Policy, and a Costly Mistake
His adult child had purchased auto insurance directly online through a well-known insurance company. The process seemed straightforward enough. Answer a few questions, select coverage, pay the premium, and move on.

Then they purchased a new vehicle.
Somewhere in the process of adding that vehicle to the policy, a critical mistake was made: the vehicle was added without comprehensive or collision coverage. There was another important detail. The vehicle was leased. That raised an obvious question: How could a leased vehicle be insured without the leasing company’s interest being properly addressed?
Unfortunately, the bigger problem became apparent when the vehicle sustained significant damage.
With no collision coverage in place, there was no collision insurance to pay for the damage. Assuming the loss fell within the coverage gap described, the owner would be responsible for the repair costs out of pocket.
And because the vehicle was leased, the situation could be even more complicated. The leasing company still has a financial interest in that vehicle, and the lease agreement typically requires the lessee to maintain comprehensive and collision coverage.
My friend wanted to know what could be done.
I wish I had a better answer. But based on the circumstances described, there was no simple insurance fix. Coverage generally cannot be added retroactively to pay for damage that has already occurred. The family would need to review the lease requirements and work through the financial consequences of the damage without relying on a policy that did not cover it.
A mistake made while setting up insurance could end up costing thousands of dollars.
How Does Something Like This Happen?
Online insurance platforms have made it easier than ever to purchase a policy. That convenience can be valuable, and buying insurance online is not inherently a bad decision. The problem is assuming that completing an online transaction means you have the right coverage.
When you purchase a vehicle, several details need attention:
- Liability coverage: Does your policy provide appropriate protection if you injure someone or damage someone else’s property?
- Collision coverage: Does your policy cover damage to your vehicle resulting from a collision, subject to your deductible and policy terms?
- Comprehensive coverage: Does your policy cover other covered losses, such as theft, hail, falling objects, or certain types of animal damage?
- Leasing or financing requirements: Has the vehicle been properly added to the policy, and have the required interests been documented? A leasing company will generally require comprehensive and collision coverage, along with specified limits and deductibles.
- Confirmation of coverage: Have you reviewed the actual declarations or updated policy documents to verify that the vehicle and the coverage’s you need are listed correctly?
These details matter. A vehicle can be listed on an insurance policy without having every coverage you assume it has.
The Problem With Being Your Own Insurance Agent
There is nothing wrong with wanting to save money. We all have bills to pay, and comparing insurance prices can make sense.
But insurance is different from buying a television or ordering something online. If you make a mistake buying a product, you may be able to return it. If you misunderstand your insurance coverage, you might not discover the problem until after a serious accident or loss.
An experienced insurance agent does more than enter information into a computer. A good agent asks questions, identifies potential gaps, explains coverage options, and helps make sure the policy reflects the client’s actual circumstances.
When a client buys a new vehicle, that conversation can be especially important. Is it financed or leased? Who needs to be listed on the policy? Are the physical damage coverage’s correct? Are the limits appropriate? Are there any special requirements?
Those questions are not just paperwork. They can make the difference between having an insurance company pay a covered claim and paying for a substantial loss yourself.
Of course, an independent agent cannot guarantee that every claim will be covered or that every mistake will be caught. But having a knowledgeable professional involved gives you another layer of review and someone to call when questions arise.
The Cheapest Insurance Is Not Always the Least Expensive
Imagine saving $20 or $30 a month on your auto insurance. Over a year, that adds up to a few hundred dollars. Now imagine discovering after an accident that you don’t have the coverage needed to repair a vehicle worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Suddenly, the savings don’t look quite as attractive.
This is why I encourage people to look beyond the premium when comparing insurance. The real question isn’t simply, “How much does this policy cost?” It is, “What protection am I getting for that price, and what could happen if something goes wrong?”
A low premium can be a good value when the coverage is right. But a low premium achieved by accident, omission, or misunderstanding can become an extremely expensive mistake.
