What else I should know about Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period?

An important rule to remember about Medicare is you can only change plans at certain times of the year.

The AEP, or Annual Enrollment Period, (October 15- December 7) allows for enrolling in, switching, or discontinuing Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans.

During this time, you can revisit current coverage and  proposed changes in coverage for the coming year.  This is done by reviewing your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC), mailed to you by your current plan in late September.  This is when you can decide if the plan you have is still the best plan for you or choose to look at other options that may better suit your needs. As you evaluate your current plan, keep in mind any changes by you, or by your plan, about your current medications.  Have your medications changed?  Has your coverage changed?  Have there been any changes to your preferred pharmacy or provider.  Are they still in network?

Any changes to your needs or your coverage warrant a Medicare plan review.

How do people know if they need to change plans? People in a Medicare health or prescription drug plan should always review the materials their plans send them, like the “Evidence of Coverage” (EOC) and “Annual Notice of Change” (ANOC). If their plans change, they should make sure they will still meet their needs for the following year. If they’re satisfied that their current plans will meet their needs for next year and it’s still being offered, they don’t need to do anything.
