Will I automatically be enrolled into Medicare when I turn 65?
If you receive Social Security, Railroad Retirement, or disability benefits, Medicare automatically enrolls you in Part A and Part B.
About three months before your 65th birthday or 24th disability month, Medicare sends you an Initial Enrollment Package. It includes details, a questionnaire, and your red, white, and blue Medicare card.
If you want both Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance), sign and keep your card. If you don’t want Part B, mark an X in the refusal box, sign the form, and return it to Social Security at the listed address. Social Security will then send you a new card showing Part A only. Before turning 65, meet with a licensed insurance agent to review your Medicare options.
How does Medicare automatic renewal work?
Your Medicare coverage renews each year unless you change it. Because benefits and costs can vary, review your options annually during the October 15–December 7 Enrollment Period.
For 2025, new rules under the Inflation Reduction Act may change Part D drug plans. Review your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC), which arrives in September, and schedule time with a licensed agent to compare options.
